Parking restrictions enacted to quell Christmas display dispute

- Len Barcousky of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting about a new parking ban on a portion of Fairley Road, which may aid traffic flow on the narrow, hilly street. However, Len's states it probably won't improve relations among some of the people who live there.

Ross commissioners voted Dec. 22 to ban parking on both sides of Fairley, roughly between homes at 106 and 110.

Several other upscale retailers, such as Nordstrom, Kate Spade, Burberry, Juicy Couture and Louis Vuitton, are slated to open at the mall soon as well, putting Ross Park Mall at the top of the local high-end retail mountain.

Ross duplex catches fire; pregnant woman unharmed

- WPXI.com is reporting that a pregnant woman is among those who escaped from a fire Sunday morning in Ross Township. Firefighters were called to a duplex that went up in flames at about 3 a.m. on Bellevue Road.

Two families, including a pregnant woman, were forced out of their homes as crews worked to extinguish the flames.

Lavorini out as Ross Manager

- Daveen Rae Kurutz of The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is reporting that longtime Ross Manager Tom Lavorini has been fired on the heels of a rocky year that nearly saw him fired from his job twice before.

Township Commission President Dan DeMarco declined comment Tuesday on the reasons behind the termination, the report said. But fellow Commissioner Peter Ferraro said officials were unhappy with Lavorini's performance.

Record Rama owner closes doors for good

August 24, 2008 - In Ross Township news, the UPI is reporting that one of the Pittsburgh area's last independent record dealers says he's bitter about the state of the recording industry that's forcing him to close his doors.

Paul Mawhinney lamented changes in the music industry as well as with consumers as he locked the doors for the last time at his Record-Rama Sound Archives store in Ross Township, Pa., the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Friday.

Ross FiOS situation: all zipped up!

– In Ross Township / West View news, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Larry Walsh wrote an interesting story on the inability of some area residents to get Verizon FiOS, the fiber optic high speed internet and TV service much ballyhooed on local television commercials. 

The frustration stems from the service being available only to certain zip codes that encompass Ross Township, but not all of them.

Highcliff expansion delays continue to roil township

- In Ross Township, Pa. news, PittsburghLive.com is reporting continued delays could increase the cost of renovations at two North Hills elementary schools to more than $6 million, school officials said.

The renovation and expansion at Highcliff and McIntyre elementaries were delayed a year because of variance requests and flooding issues, and that delay could cost taxpayers $3.1 million, officials said.

"The township is not holding these things up for political reasons," said Dan DeMarco, President of the Ross Board of Commissioners.

Ross gets out to Vote

April 23, 2008 - Voter turn out appeared high as Ross Township residents went out in droves to vote in a pivotal Democratic U.S. Presidential Primary contest between Sen. Hillary Clinton, of New York, and Sen. Barack Obama, of Illinois. The Republican candidate Sen. John McCain, of Arizona, had the advantage of watching his rivals battle it out in the Keystone State as his party nomination is all but a formality at this point.

According to CNN analysts, Allegheny County favored Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama and helped deliver the State.

Daycare capacity in Ross to increase

- In township news, the Post-Gazette's Len Barcousky is reporting Carrie L. Casper has received approval from Ross officials to double the capacity of the daycare center she operates in a home on Thompson Run Road.

Commissioners Monday granted Ms. Casper conditional-use approval to increase the number of children served by her center from the current six to a maximum of 12.

The approval stipulates that the property be inspected to assure compliance with township ordinances. Ms. Casper must also make whatever changes or improvements needed by municipal officials.

$1.3 million repaving pact OK'd in Ross

- Also in Ross township news, The PGs Len Barcousky is reporting Ross commissioners have approved a $1.3 million contract to repave more than 4 miles of road throughout the township this year.

El Grande Industries, of Monessen wo the contract as the low bidder. Their bid came in at $1,281,200.

Water main break in Ross

- KDKA is reporting that water crews are on the scene of a water main break in Ross Township.

Officials with the Westview Water Authority said a 12-inch water main broke overnight on McIntyre Road around 1:30 a.m. close to Thompson Run Road.

The water has been shut off but the lower parking lot of near-by McIntyre Elementary School is flooded. Some homes were without water service.

Because of the break, the front entrance of McIntyre Elementary School is closed. All traffic must enter and exit through the back entrance at Greenhill Road.

Ross to begin Stream Cleanup in April

- In conjunction with Earth Day, Saturday, April 19th Ross Township is planning a special clean up geared toward removing debris in and along our streams. Along with 18 other municipalities in the North Hills, is pursuing a joint stormwater management plan covering four watersheds, two of which flow thru Ross Township.

The goal is change the way stormwater is conveyed and stored with the intent to reduce the severity of flooding in those waterways while also improving the appearance of the township.

Work on McIntyre to start; Highcliff still delayed

- In Ross Township school news, The Post-Gazette's Len Barcousky is reporting North Hills School District is ready to resume expansion plans of McIntyre Elementary School in the coming months.

However, the Highcliff Elementary School renovations remain on hold.

Local music store gets 3 Mil for record collection

- In Ross Township news, The Pittsburgh Business Times and other news outlets are reporting that the music collection of Record-Rama, a local independent music store, is being sold by Paul Mawhinney, who operates the Record-Rama shop for slightly above $3 million.

The identity of the buyer, who is from Ireland, remains a mystery and it is ye to be determined if the E-bay bidder is legitimate at this point.

Wal-Mart opts out of Ross Township

- KDKA is reporting that Wal-Mart has decided McKnight Road is not suitable to handle the traffic congestion that a Wal-Mart would bring to the area and therefore have nixed plans for a Walmart Super Center on McKnight Rd in Ross Township.

Instead, Wal-Mart intends to build their new Pittsburgh area Super Center in Moon Township, thus rendering moot the local debate as to whether a Wal-Mart in Ross would be a good or a bad thing. So much for falling prices.

New president chosen by Ross commissioners

- The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting that Ross commissioners have elected an eight-year veteran and lifelong resident of Ross Township[, Daniel DeMarco, to be the new president.

Lavorini nearly voted out by commissioners

- The Post-Gazette's Len Barcousky reported that a phone-in vote from Florida saved the job of Ross Manager Tom Lavorini this week. However, the township commissioners voted 5-4 to retain the veteran administrator at their reorganization meeting Monday. Mr. Lavorini has held the job for 18 years.

Missing children turn up in Ross Township...

- KDKA.com is reporting that Pittsburgh Police have located Troy Wilson, 12, Terrell Wilson, 9, and Tyron Wilson, 6, in Ross Township, who went missing from their home on the North Side on New Year's Eve, according to their mother Sharon Watson.

Ross to spend more on paving, police in 2008

- The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Len Barcousky is reporting that the Ross property tax rate is "likely to remain unchanged next year even as the township plans to spend more money on paving and police."

The 2008 draft budget totals $14.2 million, which is about 9 percent higher than this year's $13 million spending plan. The draft budget is on display at the township building.

Salvation Army, Children's Hospital Donation Box Stolen From Ross Twp. Yard

- According to the North Hills Tattler, a local blog covering the North Hills area, a Township family who have been putting a donation box for the Salvation Army and Children's Hospital in their front yard for more than 17 years has reported the box missing. Oh, that just is not cool.

The residents of the Fairley Street home said someone swiped the entire box, which contained anywhere from $50 to $100. The box was found a short distance from the home, but the money was, naturally, gone.

- The Post-Gazette is reporting that should Perrysville Elementary School close up shop as planned, the township could create its own library in the vacated building, according to a township commissioner.
