Most neighborhoods are generally located easterly and westerly of its main business district, which itself runs northerly and southerly along McKnight Road. Bennington Woods, Berkeley Hills, Kinvara, Laurel Gardens, White Oaks, Holly Hill, Seville Area, Brookemeade, Wallingford Heights, Perrysville, Gas Road Area, and North Hills Estates include many of the more notable neighborhoods in the area.
The McKnight Road shopping district is anchored by Ross Park Mall, a regional destination that attracts visitors from far outside the community. Recently, Ross Park Mall opened several high-end fashion boutiques including a Nordstrom and Tiffany's.
The North Hills School district is undergoing consolidation and upgrades at the elementary level. Several established but small neighborhood schools have been closed as result. However, elementary schools such as Highcliff are undergoing expansion and technology upgrades, which should keep the North Hills School District's reputation as a first class educational institution going strong for some time.
The North Hills Indians football team is a source of local pride for many of the residents. The 1987 North Hills Indians football team finished the year ranked No. 1 by USA Today. The home of the Indians is Martorelli Stadium, a first class high school football facility, which features Field Turf, a state-of-the-art artificial surface. One could argue it is a better playing surface than that which carpets Heinz Field, the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Wayne Jones, the Township Manager, is the Chief Administrative Officer of the Township and is responsible to an elected Board of Commissioners for "the proper administration of the affairs of the Township, the enforcement of the Ordinances and other duties as delegated by the Board of Commissioners."
Ross Township is served by the Northland Public Library, which is actually located in the North Allegheny School District. No worries. You only need a Carnegie Library card and a ride. They won't kick you out for wearing Indian red and white (at least I don't think so).
In this writer's opinion, Ross Township is comfortable suburban area that has long since dealt with its issues of growth. You will typically enjoy more green space and less congestion than compared to say, the South Hills area of Pittsburgh. Moreover, compared to communities like Cranberry, Ross Township has a well established identity. Naturally, there is room for improvment. Namely, once again —in this writer's opinion—McKnight Rd. could somehow become more pedestrian friendly.
All in all, there are numerous great restaurants and shopping options along McKnight Road, which rival any in the northeastern region of the U.S. You will also likely to find, make and keep many friends and neighbors in Ross Township. A great community to grow up in or to raise a family of one's own; with good schools, a healthy real estate market, Ross Township is a keeper! |
